EARCOM UPDATE - OCTOBER 2003
Audio
Joe Davi continues to demonstrate his
virtuosity and versatility, writing music for film, TV, live events
and CD. He composed the soundtrack for Last Words, a featured screenplay
at Sundance, and provided sound sweetening and original composition
for Quattro Noza, awarded Best Cinematography by Sundance and recently
picked up by Lions Gate. He wrote spots for a New York Times/Herald
Tribune promotion to the Asian market and a presentation for Chase
Manhattan in conjunction with Sawyer Creative. Joe co-wrote another
tune for A&M/Interscope recording artist Mya, and wrote, produced,
arranged and performed on tracks for Universal artists Ricochet
and Fiona.
Joseph Hornof has struck a new groove
composing music for Flash movies on the web. Yellowduckdesigns commissioned
him to score a series of flash movies for Adobe's latest project,
Photoshop CS, and Direct Images has employed his skills to demonstrate
new technology from the chip manufacturer Altera. Each of these
pieces are displayed at the corporations' web sites. Joe also composed
a track for a Wells Fargo motivational video, provided audio sweetening
for movie projects by Morsel Pictures and Friedkin Digital, and
delivered a streaming audio program for the Pacific Business Group
on Health.
James LeBrecht and Berkeley Sound Artists pre-mixed the documentary Confessions of a Burning Man with their new 5.1 Surround Sound System. Final mixing took place at the Saul Zaentz Film Center, who also tapped BSA to provide editorial services and sound design for the avant-garde short film Killing Your Darling. Jim provided post-production sound for Aging in America, a documentary by the internationally acclaimed team of writer Julie Winokur and photographer Ed Kashi, which debuted on KQED/PBS in September. BSA's sound design team completed work on gaming giant Electronic Arts/Maxis' upcoming release SimCity 4 Rush Hour.
Louis Lino completed another project for Starwood Caribbean Resorts and has been busy with his usual television clients, but we find he's spending more time cutting records as of late: making "real music," as we call it. He performed with Nada Surf at the Bowery Ballroom and has had the band in his studio working on tracks for a Starbucks' compilation and an album of covers and B-sides. He has also been recording a new album with indie artist Matt Pond, which he's producing, engineering, and contributing guitar, keyboards, pedal steel, accordions... you name it.
Greg Smith scored three spots for this year's national JC Penney back-to-school TV campaign, working with the agency DDB in Chicago. These commercials went into heavy national rotation this fall. He also completed his score for a horror movie recently released by Artisan Pictures.
Film & TV
Drew Carolan produced Clowns in the Hood, a documentary for Channel 4, UK. Directed by David LaChapelle, the film documents "clowning," an underground dance movement in South Central Los Angeles. Its provocative routines combine African tribal dance acrobatics, elaborate face paint and hip hop music. It also provides a forum for competition and creative expression that keep its young participants off the streets. "Clowns in the Hood" debuts on Channel 4 this October; work on a sequel is underway. Tim Hays provided sound for the HSI/Dark Fibre Production.
William Robert Greenfield recently
completed work on two short films. He wrote, produced and directed
a mockumentary about the homeless problem, A Home For All, and produced
Hired Hitman 4, a dark comedy about video games, with writer-director
Brian Testa. A previous production, The Handkerchief, an award-winning
short written and directed by Amanda Mears for the AFI's Directing
Workshop for Women, screened at the Los Angeles Short Film Festival.
A feature science-fiction/action film written by William is now
in development. He is assisting in the production of Autoportrait,
written by Juliette Marchaud and directed by Jesse Harper, scheduled
to shoot in January 2004, as well as developing a sketch comedy
show. William continues to work on many other projects in film,
HD and Mini DV, utilizing his extensive crew and production contacts
in the Los Angeles area.
Tim Hays has been busy as usual with location sound recording and playback for commercials, music videos, and films. Tim captured Madonna & Missy Elliot's "Get into the Groove" commercial campaign for The Gap, directed by Paul Hunter; a series of spots for Toyota; spots for Sirius Satellite Radio featuring Pam Anderson, directed by David LaChapelle; promos for NBC's Miss Match with Alicia Silverstone & Average Joe; all chased with a spot of Bacardi. He's also been working on videos for Elton John, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Avril Lavigne, No Doubt, Blink 182, Justin Timberlake, Mya and Tyrese, and worked with Director Peter Berg (of "The Rundown") on an Enrique Iglesias video. Coming up are a series of commercials with Jared & Subway.
Kevin Moseley has been burning midnight oil at LA effects houses Rhythm & Hues and Riot, creating visual effects for feature films. His Flame magic brought to life Angels in America, starring Al Pacino and Meryl Streep, debuting on HBO this December. It took even more effort to create a Dr. Suess world for The Cat In The Hat, starring Mike Myers, which hits the big screen in time for Christmas. Kevin's skill is prominently displayed throughout the film, including its stunning opening scene.
Design
Nick Allen has created another website for Moonstone Hotel Properties, Cambria's FogCatcher Inn. In addition to his steady diet of html and Flash, Nick has dived back into his work as a photographer, contributing his fine art to Surfrider Foundation's Free Fall Art Benefit and marketing his photos through outlets such as Getty Images. Nick has been shooting lifestyle photography for the clothing manufacturer Patagonia, and is slated to embark upon an expedition through Mexico for them in December.
Christian Bentley developed a user interface system for Healthscope co-branded websites. It integrates the brand and color schemes of varying corporate intranets while providing an intuitive interface to users navigating through HMO and health plan data. The co-brand websites are easily updated and customized through an administrative interface. Christian re-designed the user interface of PacOnline's Broker Tool, enabling medical insurance brokers to generate quotes for clients and prospects. He designed a logo, a 24-page color printed brochure and a confidential partners report website for Concierge Asset Management. Christian also developed information architecture, sitemaps and page schematics/wireframes for the Flipcards learning tool website.
Dan Psomas launched a new website for Next Step Partners, a provider of leadership and career development programs to companies, schools and individual business people. This business developed as an extension to Career Action Groups, a site Dan had previously designed. Dan also built a new site for the group's principal, Rebecca Zucker; a promotional web site for the actor David Lockhart; and is developing a database-driven template web site system to assist real estate agents in targeting a specific neighborhood or demographic. He promises more info on that soon.
Jon Williams and Manmade have moved into new offices in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Meanwhile, their work goes on: as part of their focus on developing design solutions for sustainable businesses and the renewable energy sector, Manmade is developing fundraising and awareness materials for the Buckminster Fuller Institute. They continue to extend the brands of their existing clients: a revised sample kit and direct mail campaign for 4by6.com; investor awareness packages for Horizons; and a promotional campaign for Chophouse Records, including ads in music publications, email newsletters, and promotional web pages. Manmade have also launched Notebook, an email newsletter covering branding, information design and sustainable business.
Code
Benjamin Allen programmed the Sears American Dream Campaign website, and assisted Macromedia with the recent redesign of their website. All pages were built using XHTML 4.01 and CSS positioning. He also wrote PERL scripts for Macromedia that migrated thousands of static pages into the new format. In conjunction with Christian Bentley, Ben built out an html framework for The Pacific Group on Business Health and coded recent additions to the PacAdvantage website.
