Sam Bortnick was raised in St. Louis and later moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. His interest in photography began when his father taught him how to use his 1951 Kodak Retinette 35mm rangefinder camera. In 1990, Sam received a BFA in Photography from the Academy of Art College.

Sam's work has concentrated on both portraiture and documentary photography. His approach to portraiture balances technical proficiency with visual acuity. His documentary work reflects Sam's ability to blend-in and capture compelling images of his subject. Sam's pleasant personality and calm approach makes working with him an enjoyable experience.

His work has been purchased for both private and public collections, including a purchase in 2003 by the Alameda County Arts Commission in California. In 1994, he was awarded the Dorothy Thomson Memorial by the Berkeley Camera Club. Sam currently lives and works in Dallas, Texas.
